In the glass it shows an amber colour tending towards blonde, capped with an attractive white head. From this white crown, the nose picks up aromas of yeast and hops with fruity notes of apples and of lightly toasted malt. Arendonker tripel is a blond fermentation beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation in the bottle. Arendonker triple is traditionally brewed with Munich malt and a delicate aroma hop. The blonde beer is typically fruity in the aroma and has a slightly bitter aftertaste. The beer drinks away quickly, but is therefore somewhat treacherous. Floral hoppy finish, lingering ripe fruit yet something dry-yeasty too to balance things out; rather boozy rum-like alcohol in the very end. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Good, sweetness was actually kept in check but eventually a bit too heavy on the alcohol.
"Gruut" was a spice mixture used in the Middle Ages to flavor the light beer. The herbal mixture contained oat sage, trout, yarrow, rosemary, gale, pine needles and dead nettle. Hops were introduced later by the German monks and as a result the herbs disappeared.
For the Wittoen we do it the other way around and we replace the hops again with a number of old-fashioned herbs . In the end we obtain a subtly flavoured, amber colored beer . Definitely taste it!
