Flanders Red

A Flanders Red, are commonly referred to as the "red" beers of West Flanders. Belgian Red Beers are typically light-bodied brews with reddish-brown colors. They are infamous for their distinct sharp, fruity, sour and tart flavours which are created by special yeast strains. Very complex beers, they are produced under the age old tradition of long-term cask aging in oak, and the blending of young and old beers.

Bourgogne des Flandres ( brown beer ) comes close to the Flemish ones but contains no acidity. It creates a real feeling of wellbeing alternating with sweet touches. However it is bitter but dry, and the sharp aftertaste reminds us of his noble character.
Bourgogne des Flandres, which is produced in the legendary Timmermans brewery benefits from very old and unique brewing technique called "lambic infusion ". During this process, a selection of the best lambics is mixed with a brown high fermentation beer. After months of ripening in oak barrels, a delicious dark beer topped with a creamy foam comes out.

The flavour of Liefmans Oud Bruin, dating back to 1679, is derived from special malts matured in open vats and matured for between four and eight months. The fermentation is then restarted by mixing older and younger beers together, leading to a more balanced and consistent flavour.

Ichtegems Oud Bruin 5,5°, brewed at Strubbe brewery, is a red-brown West Flemish beer of high fermentation brewed according to an old process with different types of malt. After the main fermentation and the long bearing, a third fermentation in oak barrels follows for 18 months.
The slightly acidic complex beer is then mixed with young, somewhat sweeter, high-fermented beer and results in an excellent and thirst-quenching beer.

The brewer allow the beer to macerate with fresh cherries, raspberries and cranberries. After this maceration in oak, the beer re-ferments in the bottle. The result is RODENBACH Caractère Rouge, an exceptional RODENBACH with fruit maceration and a 7% alcohol volume. The brew is more than unique and extremely exclusive, as only 900 75-cl bottles were produced. Geunes serves this wilful beer as part of his other unique range of beer varieties in his restaurant, ’t Zilte, at the Antwerp MAS museum.

Liefmans Goudenband is one of the most distinctive dark beers in the world. Originally called IJzerenband (Iron Band) – a reference to the iron bands around the beer barrels – the bottle gained its champagne cork when it was renamed Liefmans Goudenband (Gold Band). Made in open vats with beer of mixed fermentation, it is left to mature for four to 12 months in the cellar. Mature beer is then fortified with younger beer, so the fermentation process starts up again.
