There are many beers with different characters, whether due to their flavour, level of alcohol, region of production, colour, etc. One might think that the belong to no category. In reality, there are all placed in a category know as " Belgian Specials" , a bit of a catch-all, but distinguished by the fact that these beers are found only in Belgium.
Hercule Stout 9°, from Brasserie des Légendes ( Ellezelloise) , is made in small batches, then lagered for ten days in German oak casks.
"The Hercule is considered by many to be a classic – very malty, but dry, with a hint of sweetness in the finish, and perfectly hopped. It has a very distinctive and intoxicating spicy aroma of fresh spruce that suddenly, irresistibly, fills the room when the swing-top is released. This unique house character probably derives from the strains of yeast used by the brewery – and possibly from the fermentation in oak – because the beers are made entirely of malt and hops, without any spices or sugar."

“Barbe Black” , from Verhaeghe brewery, is one of the four “Barbe” beers. The name of the series of “Barbe” beers refers to the Liege brewery “Barbe d’Or”. Brewery Barbe d’Or was a medieval brewery in the old town of Liege (Belgium) and belonged to the family “de Romsée”, an ancient Liege family whose coat of arms adorns the logo of the “Barbe” beers.
"Combines the best of two worlds: the sweet aftertaste of a dark beer with the high hops and light finish of an IPA." This beer shares its high hopping and high alcohol DNA with its paler IPA sibling, but like a stout or a porter, it gets its darker colour from roasted and dark malted barley, which also deepens the flavours a bit. It’s rich, hoppy and a bit sweet but still light on its feet.
