Kasteel Donker, from Van Honsebrouck brewery, is a member of the Belgian quadrupel family. These are strong, sweet to bitter, dark brown beers where the malt predominates. They were inspired by the beers of the Trappist brewers. It is a full-mouthed, malty beer with touches of caramel, coffee and chocolate coming from the roast malt. The sweet initial taste is quite surprising. Further tasting shows this beer to be intriguingly complex.

Kasteel Donker is an exceptional dark beer, with a touch of chocolate, banana, liquorice and raisins. A full-bodied, creamy beer.
A very strong and rich beer from the same brewery that produces Brigand. A deep dark ale, with very malty aroma and a sweetish palate. Definitely an after dinner drink! Pours with a lovely cola colored brown with a mocha colored thick head and excellent lacing - going to have a tough time cleaning the glass tomorrow morning! Aroma has some sweet accents of baked brown bread, raisins and sugar. Flavor has many of the same notes with some cinamony-chocolate making a late appearance. Candy sugar flavor is prominent and makes this very enticing and hides the ABV of 11% oh so well. Good, thick mouthfeel, low carbonation - feels just right. All around an excellent Belgian.

Definitely my favorite beer - period
I was introduced to this splendid Belgian brew years ago at a restaurant in The Netherlands, right along the Belgian border (North Brabant province). I had asked the waiter for something dark, rich, sweet, with a "toasted nuts" taste, and this was the perfect answer to my request! Ever since, I have gone to much trouble to get this beer. In the US, it's hit or miss whether I can get this in its original Belgian form, though there is a US company that puts it in cans and sells it. (The bottles from Belgium are still better!) This beer isn't for the faint of heart! 11% alcohol, but oh, so tasty!!
