The golden blonde Westmalle Extra is only brewed twice a year, primarily for use within the abbey. Achel Blonde is one of the few Trappist beers in the world and is brewed in the monastery of Notre-Dame of Saint-Benoît in Belgium. In order to get the name “trappist”, the beer must be brewed within an abbey under the supervision of the monastic community with a Cistercian tradition. These days it is difficult to meet all of these demands.
Compared to other trappist beers, the taste of the blonde Achel is more simple and has less temperament but is still fully appreciated.
In the mouth, the first taste is pleasant with a sweet hint of bitterness. The aroma perception in the mouth is long and solid and the aftertaste is not too dry. The whole taste is dominated by the malty sweetness.

This Trappist beer, brewed at the Sint-Sixtus Abbey is delivered worldwide.It pours very dark brown with big off-white head. Settles as 3 cm thick blanker of fluffy foam. Substantial lacing. Aroma is a little subdued due to the massive amount of foam. But it gets stronger as the beer warms up. Aroma is sweetish with caramel, sugar, lightly roasted malts, humid cellar and damp old newspapers. Medium carbonation. Medium thick texture. Flavor is (only) medium sweet. Followed by a quite strong bitterness with an acidic hint. Aftertaste is bitter. Lingering. Always hard to form an opinion on such a celebrity beer.
