The modern brewery is now installed in the old abbey stables which date from the early 1800's. The return of the brewery Val de Sambre to the abbey site marked a welcome homecoming for artisan brewing to the area.

St. Lutgarde (1182-1246), patron saint of Flanders, dedicated her life to religion in silence and fasting. She was a mystical saint of the Christendom. At the age of 17, she had an apparition, convincing her to become a nun. As she later refused  to be at the head of the Abbey of Tongeren, she decided to join the Abbey of Aywiers to live the rest of her life in prayer and humility.

Starting from this tradition, we bake, as first malt bakery in the world, all our own malts ourselves. It concerns here new kinds of malt that we develop especially for each beer individually. They are unique and baked according or own creative methods.

Brouwerij De Plukker was founded in 2011 by Joris Cambie and Kris Langouche

Back in 2011 organic hop farmer Joris Cambie and brewer Kris Langouche decided to join forces. The Cambie family had been growing hops in the Poperinge fields for several generations by then and switched over to organic farming in 1997. Ample justification for Joris and Kris to launch a traditional-style brewery together on the basis of Joris’ hopmaking business.

The brewery was, is and remains a family business: no monks or large companies in sight. The secrets of his successes were passed on from father to son until they became fathers themselves… and so on. However, the sons of the sixties generation had other plans. In 1966 the brewery dozed off for a short nap.
